The defending 4A State Champion Bulldogs' 2026 regular season read like a who's who of New Mexico's top squads. They'd opened the year with Class 4A ninth-ranked Grants and spent their first tournament -- the New Mexico Invitational in Las Cruces -- battling Class 5A No. 3 Rio Rancho, No. 9 Los Lunas, and No. 10 Las Cruces High. Their home tournament began with a showdown against 4A third-ranked (second on MaxPreps) Deming, and they paused only for a 4-1 win over defending Class 3A State Champion NMMI before heading to Rio Rancho for the Sal Puentes Memorial, where their gamut included 5A top-ranked Cleveland and 4A No. 3 and No. 1 Albuquerque Academy and Goddard, respectively.

It was fitting, then, that their final week of pre-district play would square them off against two more 5A opponents, beginning Tuesday with Roswell High and ending Saturday with this season's Eddy County War double header against sixth-ranked Carlsbad. And when the blowing dust had cleared Saturday, the Diamond 'Dogs were back on the plus side at 10-7 with a run-rule shutout of the Coyotes and a big sweep of the Cavemen under their belts.

As momentum-boosters heading into district go, suffice to say it was a pretty good week.

The Artesia boys didn't keep their fans at Brainard Park long Tuesday as the temperature began to drop, making quick work of Roswell High in a contest that saw the team deliver 10 runs on 10 hits and senior Daelon Pacheco and junior Elijah Carrasco combine for a five-inning three-hit shutout on the mound. After picking up their first two runs in the first and second innings on a Jack Byers RBI double off the wall in center field and an RBI base hit to shallow right by Charlie Campbell, the Bulldogs did the bulk of their damage in the bottom of the third. Consecutive singles by Derrick Warren, Byers and Pacheco -- the latter two producing a run each -- got the ball rolling, and Pacheco and Jett Whitmire -- aboard on an error -- would score on back-to-back base knocks from Carrasco and Hayden Moser. After batting around, the 'Dogs made it 8-0 on an RBI single to left by Warren.

The Coyotes had been able to put runners in scoring position in their first three trips to the plate, but all were left standing by a pair of fielder's choices, two strikeouts looking, a pop fly to Jett Fuentes at shortstop, and a failed stolen base attempt that saw catcher Brant Usherwood gun down Roswell's Andrew Fuentes at second. Roswell High would go down in order in their final at-bats, however, with Pacheco striking out two and Usherwood fielding a swinging bunt for an out in the fourth, and Carrasco getting fly outs to Fuentes and Campbell in left and a ground ball to Byers at third in the fifth.

Artesia would secure the run rule in the bottom halves of those innings after Usherwood -- on via an error -- scored on a Campbell single to center and Warren -- who reached on a fielder's choice before stealing both second and third -- crossed the plate on a walk-off wild pitch. Pacheco gave up three hits and one walk while striking out seven in his four innings on the hill, and Carrasco had zeroes across the board in the top of the fifth. At the plate, Byers was 2-3 on the night with a double and two RBI, Campbell 2-3 with two runs batted in, and Warren 2-4 with one RBI.

There was significantly more suspense surrounding Saturday's double dip with county rival Carlsbad, which opened with a 1-0 pitchers' duel and closed with a 6-5 walk-off thriller. Senior Byers and Caveman junior Evan Ortiz battled through a scoreless five-and-a-half in Game One. Byers had the clear upper hand in terms of strikeouts with 11 in his two-hit shutout and seated Carlsbad in order in four of their seven trips to the plate. The boys in blue were able to load the bases in the top of two on a pair of walks and a hit batsman before Byers finished striking out the side, and they'd interrupt three more Ks in the fourth with their only two hits of the game: singles by EZ Lopez and Wade Cozart. But apart from one more hit-by-pitch in the sixth, that would be it for Carlsbad offensively in the contest.

The 'Dogs, meanwhile, went down swinging just once and made solid contact -- just right at the Caveman defense. Byers launched a two-out double to left in the first and Fuentes a single up the middle in the third, and Artesia would load the bases in the fifth on an Usherwood HP, a base hit from Moser, and a Campbell walk. That threat would end on an L-5-U double play, despite Carlsbad third-baseman Jayden Carter appearing to miss the bag with his foot, but the Bulldogs would finally end the drought in the sixth. Derrick Warren beat out an infield single to the left side to lead off that half-inning and stole second, but it appeared as if he might be stranded following a line out to center and a fly ball to short. Whitmire would punch a ground ball into the gap between third and short, however, to score the speedy Warren from second, and that was all the boys in orange needed. With the bottom third of the inning up in the top of seven, a strikeout, a ground out to Fuentes, and a fly ball to Whitmire in center ended the game.

Artesia appeared to have Game Two more firmly in hand Saturday afternoon, but it wouldn't have been the Eddy County War without a few extra twists, turns, and blood pressure spikes.

After starting pitcher Pacheco struck out three and forced a trio of fly balls while allowing just a hit batsman and a double to left-center by Cozard through two, the 'Dogs would plate their first two runs in the bottom of the second on a balk and a passed ball that scored Whitmire and Carrasco, on with a base hit to right and a fielder's choice, respectively. The Cavemen got a leadoff double to center from catcher Connor Roberson in the third, but his courtesy runner, Mitchell Espinda, would be impressively erased by a 2-6-5 pick-off between Usherwood, Fuentes and Byers. But in between Artesia leaving three on the pond in their third and fourth trips to the plate, Carlsbad was able to tie things up at 2-all in the top of four on a walk and a two-run homer off the top of the left-field fence by Brock Wright.

The 'Dogs wasted little time responding, scoring three in the bottom of the fifth on a two-RBI single to center by Pacheco and a double down the left-field line by Usherwood to make it 5-2. That allowed them to maintain what turned out to be a vital two-run cushion in the sixth after the Cavemen scored on a double to the right side by Wright. The seventh was about to bring fans on both halves of the field to their feet.

It started with a walk by No. 8 batter Augie Venegas, who'd head to second soon after on a throwing error during a pick-off attempt. Following a fly out to Whitmire in center, however, Venegas was thrown out at third on a heads-up fielder's choice by shortstop Fuentes for a significant out. A subsequent single to left by Ricardo Herrera that would've plated Venegas gave the Cavemen runners on first and second instead, and though both would come home on back-to-back bases-loaded hit batsmen, a 6-3 ground out held Carlsbad to a 5-5 tie.

That left the door open for the Bulldogs to end it in the home half, and after a fly out to center, Byers, Pacheco and Whitmire gave the team the baserunners they needed on a single to center and a pair of walks, respectively. A strikeout brought Carlsbad within one of sending the contest into extra innings. But with an 0-1 count, Carrasco took a deep breath and stepped into the box to face his third Caveman pitcher of the game -- senior Herrera -- and sent a hard shot off the mound and into center for the walk-off win. The party was then on in right field, as the boys in orange dove into a Dog Pile to celebrate the sweep, a particularly special one for the team's 10 seniors -- Byers, Fuentes, Warren, Usherwood, Campbell, Pacheco, Whitmire, Diego Morales, Griffin Huizenga and Connor Tutak -- in their final outing against Carlsbad.

Pacheco and Campbell pitched the bulk of the contest, giving up just three hits apiece and striking out a combined five, while Morales threw the final out of the seventh. At the plate, Carrasco was 2-4 with the game-winning RBI, Pacheco 1-3 with two runs batted in, and Usherwood 1-3 with a double and one RBI.

The second-ranked Bulldogs will now prepare to open their District 4-AAAA schedule this week against Portales, hosting the single game of that three-game series at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at Brainard Park before heading to Portales Friday, April 17, for a 5 and 7 p.m. double header against the Rams. The Class 4A 13th-ranked Rams currently stand at 7-9 on the season and have two opponents in common with Artesia: NMMI, whom Portales defeated 6-5 March 28, and Roswell High, to whom the Rams have lost thrice: 9-1 March 14, 21-11 March 24, and 11-9 March 31. LADY BULLDOG SOFTBALL

A graphic reading "Bomb Squad" pictures two teen girls in softball uniforms holding softballs.

PICTURED: Jenna Whitmire and Kayden Apodaca both homered in Game Two of Tuesday's double-header sweep against Carlsbad on the road.

With only one double header against Carlsbad on the schedule each season now, county bragging rights have been condensed between two of New Mexico's Top 10 softball programs: home or away, sweep or split. One chance for seniors -- of whom Artesia has five this year: Kayden Apodaca, Jenna Whitmire, Leslie Molina, Michelle Loya and Miranda Perez -- to win or earn their share of the Eddy County War. And this year, the Lady Bulldogs took it all.

Behind strong pitching, timely hitting, and their inherently scrappy ability to bounce back from mistakes, the girls in orange swept the Class 5A 10th-ranked Cavegirls Tuesday on their home blue turf, breaking a 3-3 tie for a 7-4 win in Game One before nearly earning a shutout in a 4-1 victory in Game Two. All 11 of Artesia's runs in the contest were earned.

After both teams left a runner stranded at first in the opening inning, the Lady 'Dogs would strike first in the top of the second. After Whitmire walked to lead off, Molina was struck by a pitch, putting two on for No. 7 batter Brooklyn Fuentes, who sent a single into right to plate Whitmire before moving to second on the throw to third, where Molina arrived safely. A solid base hit to right-center by Jade Hammond then made it 2-0, and Artesia's third run scored in the person of Fuentes on a ground out to second by Janae Molina. A fielder's choice and an F-4-3 double play between Hammond and Leslie Molina negated a leadoff single by the Cavegirls in the home half, but Carlsbad picked up their first run in the third on a throwing error during a pick-off attempt at third. Carlsbad would then tie the game at 3-all in the fourth -- with help from two errors, a wild pitch, and a passed ball -- on a Marisela Reyes RBI single and an RBI double from Daisha Nieto.

With the top of the order coming up in the fifth, however, the Lady Bulldogs mounted an impressive rally, batting around to retake the lead. Danyela Munoz and Katrin Marquez got things off the ground with back-to-back singles to left, and after a walk by Apodaca loaded the bases, designated hitter A'dyn Levario broke the tie with a base hit to shallow center. A Whitmire walk made it 5-3, and a two-out, two-RBI single down the right-field line by Hammond gave Artesia a healthy cushion, 7-3. Carlsbad was able to get one run back in the bottom of five on consecutive one-out singles by Kendra and Katrina Ortega and two walks -- the latter with the bases juiced -- by Makayla Chester and Reyes. Apodaca and her defense then seated the Cavegirls in order in the bottom of six and negated singles from Chester and Reyes in the seventh with a fielder's choice, a gunning down of Anya Rentner at third by right-fielder Myra Bustamante on Reyes' single, and a ground out to Marquez at third.

Apodaca finished with eight hits and just one earned run to her credit in the seven-inning, 7-4 win, striking out four and walking six. At the plate, Hammond went 3-4 with three runs batted in. Junior Katrina Ortega took the loss in the circle for Carlsbad with seven hits and seven earned runs allowed amidst nine strikeouts and five walks, and Reyes led the team at the plate, going 2-3 with two RBI.

The Lady Bulldogs again took control of the contest early in the nightcap, claiming the lead on one quick swing in the top of the second and never relinquishing it. Whitmire led off with a home run to left in that at-bat, and Artesia would need just one swing to make it 2-0 as well, as Apodaca sent a leadoff bomb of her own over the fence in left in the top of the fifth. The Cavegirls were able to cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth when Chester -- on with a two-out base hit -- scored from first on a double by Reyes. But the Artesia girls tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on walks by Whitmire and Leslie Molina, a passed ball, and two wild pitches. And although Carlsbad got a one-out triple from Brooklyn Cook in the bottom of the inning, two strikeouts by Marquez ended the threat and the game, 4-1.

The sophomore Marquez threw an excellent outing against the home team, giving up just four hits and one earned run while walking none and striking out 11. Her counterpart, freshman Emory Bland, finished with seven hits, four earned runs, four Ks, and six walks. The Lady 'Dogs were led offensively by Apodaca and Whitmire, 2-4 with a double, a homer, and a run batted in and 1-2 with a HR and one RBI, respectively. Reyes was 2-3 for the Cavegirls with a double and one RBI.

PICTURED: A'dyn Levario, left, and Katrin Marquez came through with clutch home runs in the fifth to help spur Artesia's comeback against Hobbs.

The Artesia girls then put a bark on the final week of their 2026 regular season Friday, April 10, battling from behind to secure a 7-6 win over Class 5A host Hobbs in their final at-bat after falling behind 6-0 in the first two innings of play.

The Lady Eagles had scored five of those runs in their inaugural trip to the plate, taking advantage of a trio of walks to load the bases and scoring on another base on balls, a wild pitch, and an error in the outfield that led to a collision. Hobbs then made it 6-0 in the second on four more walks and two more wild pitches. The Lady Bulldogs, meanwhile, got a base hit in the first from Apodaca and another single in the second by Leslie Molina but continued to go scoreless until the third. The top half of the order's sticks awoke in that at-bat. Munoz doubled to lead off and appeared to score on a long fly ball to center by Marquez that was caught at the fence. Despite clearly tagging up, however, Munoz was ruled not to have done so, giving Artesia two quick outs. But Apodaca came through with a triple to the fence in right and came home on a single down the first-base line by A'dyn Levario to give the Lady 'Dogs their first run.

Hammond led off the fourth with a base hit to center and came around on back-to-back two-out singles from Janae Molina and Munoz, and the Artesia girls would pull back within one of Hobbs, 6-5, with a big trip to the plate in the fifth. Marquez sent a home run over the fence in right-center to lead off that half-inning, and a ground out later, Levario launched a liner over the fence on the opposite side to make it 6-4. Whitmire followed with a single up the middle and took second on a passed ball, and she'd score Artesia's fifth run on a double to right-center from Hammond.

Marquez, meanwhile, who'd come on in relief of Apodaca for the final out of the second inning, was giving the Lady Eagles fits at the plate, putting Hobbs down in order in their third through sixth at-bats on seven strikeouts, a ground out back to her in the circle, and four fly balls. That allowed all of Artesia's runs to count toward their comeback effort, and in the top of the seventh, one last two-out rally did the job. A walk by Whitmire was followed by a double to the left-field corner by Hammond to put runners on second and third for Fuentes, who belted a double to the right-center-field fence to give the Lady 'Dogs their first lead, 7-6. The Eagles got their leadoff batter on via an error, and she'd advance to second on a sacrifice bunt. But Marquez would overcome that and a one-out walk, buckling down to strike out the next two to the plate and seal the win.

Hobbs closed out with just one hit in the contest off of Apodaca in the bottom of the first. Marquez allowed no more through her five-and-one-third innings of work, striking out nine. The Lady Bulldogs were led at the plate by Hammond, who went 3-4 with a double and one RBI. Munoz, Apodaca, Levario and Fuentes were all 2-4, Levario with a homer and two RBI, Fuentes with a double and two runs batted in, Munoz with a double and one RBI, and Apodaca with a triple.

The top-ranked Artesia girls are now preparing to open their second season against Goddard at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at the Mack Chase Athletic Complex. They'll then host Lovington in a 5 and 7 p.m. double header Friday, April 17, also at The Mack. Tickets to Tuesday's game can be purchased here, and tickets to Friday's games can be purchased here. The Lady Rockets are currently 9-8 on the season and ranked eighth (seventh on MaxPreps) in Class 4A. The Lady Wildcats stand at 9-8 as well and are ranked seventh in 4A (eighth on MaxPreps). District 4-AAAA's other member, Portales, went 7-9 in the regular season and is unranked in the coaches' polls, 18th on MaxPreps.

JV ROUND-UP

A graphic reads "Junior Varsity Spring Sports".

"A" Baseball

The JV "A" Diamond 'Dogs got their week started Tuesday with a run-rule win of their own over Roswell High, topping the Coyotes 12-1 in five innings on the road. The Bulldogs took an early lead in the contest when Tyler Egeland, on with a leadoff single, stole second and third before coming home on an error during a pick-off attempt. Artesia then made it 2-0 in the top of the first on a Donovan Wisen RBI base hit that plated De'Angelo Catano, aboard with a triple to right. Three more runs crossed in the second on a Kaden Chavarria two-RBI double to left and Kai Greathouse RBI single to the same spot, and the Bulldogs put the run rule on the table in the fourth, 12-0, on a Chavarria RBI base hit, an inside-the-park grand slam to center by Greathouse, a Juan Galindo RBI double, and a passed ball. The Coyotes were able to prevent the shutout in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch, but Greathouse went on to finish striking out the side to end the game. In addition to Greathouse's 2-3, five-RBI showing at the plate, he tossed a five-inning no-hitter, striking out eight. Egeland also went 2-3 offensively, Chavarria 2-4 with three RBI, and Catano 2-4.

The JV "A" then joined the varsity in hosting a double header against Carlsbad Saturday, coming up short of the Cavemen in two close ones. It was the 'Dogs who struck first in a see-saw Game One, going up 1-0 in the bottom of the first when Greathouse, aboard with a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out, and took home amidst a double-steal with Logan Rodriguez, who was hit by a pitch. Carlsbad was able to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on a two-RBI single by Nolan Murray, but the boys in orange would re-turn the tables in the home half, making it 3-2 on a two-RBI double to left by Greathouse. The Cavemen tied things up in the top of three, however, on an RBI base hit from Jaxson Duarte, then reclaimed the lead, 5-3, on a two-RBI single from Noah Quintela. The Artesia boys pulled back within one in the fifth when Greathouse, on with a base knock, once again stole second and third before scoring on a pick-off attempt error, but Carlsbad would set the final, 6-4, in the top of the sixth on a Cam Chavez RBI single. The 'Dogs got one runner on in the home half of that inning on a hit by pitch but lost him to a failed steal attempt.

Game Two Saturday saw the boys in blue draw first blood in the top of the first on an Andrew Mendez sacrifice fly, then go up 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI single from Dominic Pineda and 3-0 in the fifth on a double-steal. The Bulldogs logged their first run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI ground out by Greathouse that scored Caden Corbell, on with a single to right. But it would also be their last run, as Carlsbad starter Jojo Martinez struck out the side to close the book.

Two more double headers remain on the JV "A" team's 2026 slate: 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 13, versus Goddard in Roswell and 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, against the Rockets in Artesia. Tickets for the April 13 games at Goddard can be purchased here, and tickets for the April 21 home bouts can be purchased here.

"B" Baseball

The Bulldog JV "B" opened their week Monday, April 6, with a tough pair of 8-1 losses to Goddard but bounced back Thursday, April 9, with a sweep of Dexter on the road, 22-0 and 16-0 in three innings apiece.

The Artesia boys got their lone run in Game One against the Rockets in the bottom of the first when Ryan Fierro, on as a leadoff hit batsman, stole second and third before coming home on a passed ball. But from there, it was all Goddard as the 'Dogs struggled defensively. The Rockets took a 2-1 lead in the second via a trio of errors and made it 7-1 in the fourth on a passed ball, a Westin Kamper RBI double, and an Eli Cooper RBI single. Goddard rounded out the 8-1 final in the fifth on a Mason Duer RBI base hit. The Rockets then got Game Two started with a four-inning second that began with back-to-back RBI singles from Lucas Brown and Duer and ended with a two-RBI double from Becker Dodson. Artesia answered with one in the home half on a Jace Miles triple, but Goddard plated four more in the third on a Sean Bayes RBI single, a wild pitch, an error, and a base hit from Carlos Pacheco. The Bulldogs went down in order in their final two at-bats.

The boys in orange fared far better offensively in their double dip against Dexter Thursday, racking up 28 total hits and getting one- and two-hit shutouts from pitchers Colt Griffith and Jurijah Gonzales. The 'Dogs did a whopping 14 runs' worth of damage in the top of the first in Game One, batting around and scoring on a passed ball, two double-steals, a bases-loaded hit batsman, two bases-loaded walks, a Gonzales RBI single, two- and one-RBI doubles from Luke Thacker and Fierro, and an inside-the-park grand slam by Griffith. They'd secure the run-rule margin plus seven more in the top of the third on a pair of bases-loaded HPs, RBI singles by Donovan Wisen and Thacker, and a big grand slam to left by Chase Collins. Griffith then struck out two and forced a ground out to Fierro at second to end the game.

The Bulldogs again delivered a massive inaugural at-bat in the nightcap, scoring 15 on two passed balls; two wild pitches; two bases-loaded walks; RBI singles from Miles, Drake Thurman, Fierro, Grayden Washichek, Thacker and Chris Martinez; and a two-RBI double to left by Collins. After Gonzales twice struck out the side, the 'Dogs tacked on their 16th and final run in the top of three on a Griffith RBI single to right that scored Thacker, on with a one-out triple to center.

The JV "B" 'Dogs also have two more double headers remaining on their schedule this season: 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, against Lovington in Artesia and 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 20, versus Goddard in Roswell. Tickets for the April 14 games are not yet available online; tickets for the April 20 contests can be purchased here.

The JV "A", meanwhile, hosted a double header Monday, April 6, against Jal at The Mack, the results of which were also unavailable; however, the JV Lady 'Dogs got a sweep of Hobbs in their most recent games Friday, April 10, on the road, defeating the Lady Eagles by scores of 14-2 and 11-3.
